Ask and It Is Given: Learning to Manifest Your Desires

AUTHOR: Esther and Jerry Hicks (The Teachings of Abraham)

PUBLISHED: 2004

MY COMMENTS:

This is a valuable resource for not only understanding the workings of the Law of Attraction, but for helpful tips on how to raise our own vibration to take full advantage of it … and of life!

This was just the second book I read in this genre as I took my first tentative steps down my spiritual journey.  At that time, I was mostly interested in discovering the scientific foundation for these concepts, but I was open to reading other material, as well.

Well, this book definitely qualifies as “other material”!  It’s an example of a “channeled” work … something I wasn’t familiar with back then, but which has become much more commonplace in today’s age.

What do you mean by “channeled”?

Channeling is a term used to describe an ability that it turns out we all have, but like any ability or skill, some are better at it than others.

It’s an ability to receive information from unseen energies … i.e., “souls not in bodies” or “discarnate intelligence.”

I’ve mentioned psychic mediums in previous posts (here’s one) … they “channel” the Other Side when they speak with departed loved ones.  But other people channel as well, tapping into different sources of consciousness … conscious energies which may have never occupied a human body.

Esther Hicks, one of the authors, is such a person.  In the introduction to the book she describes how this came about for her and how it works.

The intelligence that Esther Hicks channels goes by the name of “Abraham.”  This means the content of this book is not really coming from Esther and Jerry Hicks, but rather from Abraham, “as told to Esther.”

I want to point out, however, that even if the concept of channeling is not one you’re comfortable with or believe in, this book is still well worth reading.  Just read it as though the content is coming directly from the authors, because at least to some degree, it is!

What I particularly appreciate about this book

The Law of Attraction (introduced in My Back Story) states that the nature of experience we attract into our life varies depending upon the level of vibration we’re emitting … like attracts like

When we’re filled with positive emotions and attitudes, we emit high vibrations, which then draw to us high-vibration (positive) experiences.  And, of course, the reverse is true for negative emotions and attitudes, which result in lower vibrations.

Or, as this book explains slightly differently, we have an infinite source of well-being that flows to us and when our vibration is high, we allow it in, and life runs smoothly.  When our vibration is low, we cut it off, allowing negativity and difficulties to rush in instead.

One way or another, the more positively we can think and feel … raising our vibration … the more that positive experience will flow to us.

However … that can be easier said than done!

In fact, there are times it can be difficult … if not downright impossible … to tap into positivity in order to raise our vibration.

This book acknowledges that reality.  But more importantly, it introduces tips and techniques we can use to raise our vibration, tailored to wherever we currently are on the emotional scale

For example, some of these techniques work well if we’re already jumping for joy and just want to jump higher … perhaps we want to increase our creativity, ensure we choose the best option for a decision we’re facing, extend our positive feelings further, etc.

Conversely, if we’re struggling with common life issues … finances, grief, illness, relationships, even depression … other techniques are designed to help us inch our way forward.

And, of course, our emotional state can change … day-to-day, hour-to-hour, even minute-to-minute … depending upon what’s going on in our life.  So, we’re able to pick and choose from its list of twenty-two suggestions, selecting whatever feels right at that time.

(Side note:  I’d recommend reading through all of the suggestions at some point, even if they don’t seem to apply … partly to become familiar with what’s available, and partly because the explanation and examples provided for each can be useful in themselves.)

The net of it is, whether we’re trying to raise our vibration because we’re consciously working with the Law of Attraction, or we’re just simply trying to find ways to feel better, this book is a valuable resource.
