My Comments:
This was a pivotal book for me … a must-read if you’re interested in the scientific foundation behind “mind over matter.”
In The Biology of Belief, Bruce Lipton, an accomplished cellular biologist, lays out his research discoveries that completely upend conventional scientific thinking. They prove that DNA does not control our genes and predetermine the illnesses, diseases, conditions, and syndromes that come our way.
Growing up, we were taught, for example, if my mother and aunt got breast cancer, then as a girl, I’m destined to get breast cancer. If my grandfather, father, and uncle died of heart disease … well, as a guy, I will, too.
Not so fast … ! What Lipton’s research clearly demonstrates is that although we may have genes that predispose us to breast cancer or heart disease, whether or not these genes “act out” depends on signals they receive from their environment … including the thoughts we provide them. No kidding!
So, what does this mean? It means we are not victims of the genes we inherit through birth … we are actually in control of our biology!
This in itself is a stunning revelation, but then Lipton goes on to show that what this really means is, it’s not just our biology … we are actually in control of our life! Mind over matter ….
WOW! A huge, exciting discovery!
Scientifically, Lipton’s research led into the emerging field of “epigenetics,” a field of study which continues to evolve. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, “Epigenetics is the study of how your behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect the way your genes work.” Exactly.
But even more profoundly, as he explains in his book, Lipton’s research led him to a spiritual epiphany … he transformed from a materialist scientist into a spiritual scientist in one eureka moment.
When I first read The Biology of Belief in early 2006, I was working toward my certification as a BodyTalk energy healer … a complete one-hundred-and-eighty-degree flip from my “day job” as a conventional businessperson.
Although I felt I “knew” there was legitimacy in energy healing, the generally accepted evidence supporting it at the time was … well, “thin,” you might say.
But to my great excitement, Bruce Lipton also describes in this book how his discoveries provide the rationale for why energy-based healing modalities are able to be effective … acupuncture, chiropractic, massage therapy, and others. In fact, he reveals his personal use of one such modality and how it was life-changing.
Aha! This was scientific validation of the path I was pursuing, which for me was worth its weight in gold!
This book provides a variety of insights into the very life that supports our own … a community of trillions of cells … and what makes them tick.
By its nature, Lipton’s research into how cells work is technical, and he doesn’t gloss over the concepts, using the language of biology to explain them. However, he does an excellent job of making this complex subject accessible for a layperson through the use of several simple and effective analogies.
The first two chapters are the most technical, yet still understandable and definitely worth taking the time to read. After this, the technical stuff is less intense and the book gets more into a description of what this all means to our lives.
Some years ago, Bruce Lipton shifted his focus from research and teaching in order to take these ground-breaking discoveries to the public … helping in the ever-growing pursuit of bridging science and spirituality.
He has become a highly respected, sought after, and world-renowned author and speaker in this arena … one of my FAVOURITES!
